Director

Keith Cheetham

Award winning Producer and Director in film and television. He began his career in television as a production designer for BBC Television, designing major drama and arts series including Dr Who, Omnibus and Arena. He designed the very first colour production of “Ahmal and the Night Visitors”, recorded in the presence of the composer, Gian Carlo Menotti.

For television he has worked with and directed a number of foreign theatre companies including the Moscow Arts Theatre, and the Comedie- Francaise, working on Moliere, Racine, Chekhov, Synge and Plautus. On documentaries he has collaborated with international artists including Sir Michael Tippett, Sir Colin Davies, Jacqueline du Pre, Menotti, Dame Alicia Markova, and Stephen Sondheim. Music productions include Opera workshops; a tv production of 'The Little Sweep'(Britten); a video version of Walton's 'Facade'; Voice of the City - A Musical Biography of Irving Berlin and 'Blues in the Night, adapted from the Broadway Stage for television. He has designed and directed many Multi Media events in America, Hong Kong and Europe. For the past year he has collaborated with the celebrated Welsh soprano Patricia O'Neill on 'Can You Sing', a competition to find talented young singers.  Keith has been the Chairman of the Adjudicators and directed the final at the Millennium Centre in Cardiff.

Currently he is developing a new opera with the composer Ben Ellin to be premiered in 2010, preparing for a new series of ‘Can You Sing’, adapting ‘Last Encore’ a musical play for video and directing a new video production of Menotti’s ‘The Telephone’.

Conductor

Greg Beardsell

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Greg Beardsell is Musical Director of the Bournemouth Symphony Chorus, the Wooburn Singers and the Irish Youth Choir, Artistic Director of the Ulster Youth Choir and Associate Musical Director of the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain. Greg’s previous posts also include Music Director of the Oxford Chamber Choir, conductor of the Manchester Boys' Choir and Music Director of the Surrey Youth Choir, whom he led to the Grand Finals of the Sainsbury’s Choir of the Year in 2002. He was also a founder director of Opera Works. In 2005, he was the BBC Singers conducting scholar.

Much of Greg’s time is devoted to tutoring on singing and choral courses such as the Eton Choral Courses, the IAPS Choral Course and Cranleigh Choral Week. He regularly leads workshops around the country on behalf of the National Youth Choirs, the Association of British Choral Director, the Association of Irish Choirs and the Armonico Consort. Greg is also in demand as an adjudicator and has adjudicated at the Choral Festivals in Navan, Bangor, Sligo and the International Championship of Collegiate a Cappella in Oxford. Since last year, he has been engaged by Faber Music to compose new music for their Sing Up! programme.

As his work with BSC he has worked with the St. Endellion Festival Chorus, the BBC Symphony Chorus, the Bach Choir and the London Symphony Chorus and prepared works for conductors such as Marin Alsop, Kees Bakels, Edward Gardner, David Hill, Roland Boer, Sir Colin Davis and Richard Hickox. He has also directed the Sagittarian Consort of Cambridge, the Classical Soloists, La Nuova Musica, the City of London Sinfonia and the BBC Singers.

Dominic Peckham

Assistant Conductor

Born in Southampton, Dominic holds a BMus (Hons) and Post Graduate Diploma from The Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama after leaving a scholarship place at Chetham’s School of Music.

 

Dominic has been hailed as ‘a lithe and modern Handelian’ and ‘one of the most exciting conductors of his generation’ whilst being commended for his ‘super direction’ of both orchestras and choirs worldwide and delivering ‘gutsy, raw and exciting’ performances

 

Dominic is Artistic Director of ‘iSing’ – The UK Schools Workshop Tour, Guest Conductor of The National Youth Choirs of Great Britain, Guest Musical Director of The National Youth Training Choir of Scotland, Conductor of The Ulster Youth Training Choir, Chorusmaster and Associate Conductor of 2x2 Opera UK and Adjudicator of The International Collegiate A Cappella Competition. Until June of this year he was also Musical Director of The Edinburgh Singers and Orchestra, The Merchant Voices at The Glasgow City Halls, The Edinburgh Youth Choir, and was the recipient The Alexander Gibson Memorial Fellowship at The Royal Scottish National Orchestra.

Ben Driver

Repetiteur

Ben Driver was Organ Scholar at Oriel College, Oxford, having sung for five years as a chorister at St Margaret’s Westminster under the direction of Richard Hickox. 

He subsequently conducted the Cherwell Singers in Oxford, where he was Assistant Organist at the University Church, and was a founder member of the Finzi Singers. 

He has worked as director, singer and accompanist with a wide range of groups, including Millennium Novum, Richmond Voices and the Elysian Singers of London.  He has also made several recordings and broadcasts, as singer, player and producer.  Ben taught mathematics at Tiffin School for eleven years and is currently Senior Master at King’s College School, Wimbledon.

He lives in St Margaret’s with a gang of young pirates and has supported several of 2x2 Opera’s productions as repetiteur, voice coach and triangle player.

 

Michael Davis

 

Baritone

 

 

Born in London, Michael Davis studied at Oxford University and the Royal College of Music, where he was supported by the Constant and Kit Lambert Studentship.

 

Recent concert performances include Mahler’s 8th Symphony at the Sage Gateshead, Haydn’s THE SEASONS for East Grinstead Choral Society and a recital at Waltham Abbey, while opera roles include Father  HANSEL AND GRETEL for 2X2 Opera, Sheriff and Plunkett (cover) MARTHA for Northampton Festival Opera and Opera South and title role in Stradella's IL TRESPOLO TUTORE (cover), Simone LA FINTA SEMPLICE, Sam TROUBLE IN TAHITI, scenes as both Papageno DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE and Demetrius A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM and the role of Pluto in the first performance of John Caldwell's THE STORY OF ORPHEUS, all for New Chamber Opera, Oxford. In addition, Michael has performed scenes as both Guglielmo COSI FAN TUTTE and title role RIGOLETTO for the British Youth Opera Easter workshops. At the Royal College of Music, he has sung scenes as Guglielmo and Marcello LA BOHEME, Poulenc songs in a concert accompanied by Iain Burnside, and the role of Nicandro (cover) for the RCM Opera school’s acclaimed production of Atalanta. As an ensemble singer, he has worked for a range of groups, including the BBC Singers. Future plans include song recitals at the National Gallery and the AGM of the Wagner society of Great Britain, a return to 2X2 Opera to sing Sir William Crusoe and Jim Cox in Offenbach’s ROBINSON CRUSOE and Beethoven 9 with the Brunel Sinfonia.

 

Tenor

Harry Bagnall

After graduating with honours in English Literature from the University of Warwick, Harry Bagnall worked variously in arts administration and music education, before undertaking postgraduate singing study at the Royal Academy of Music with Philip Doghan. He now leads a busy professional life as a singer combining solo concert work, choral music and opera with a busy teaching practice.

 

Recent concert work has included Haydn’s Creation, Rossini’s Petite Messe Sollonnelle, Monteverdi’s Vespers, CPE Bach’s Magnificat, Handel’s Messiah, and Bach’s St John Passion. At the Royal Academy, Harry has taken many opera roles including Eisenstein (Die Fledermaus), Sir Philip (Owen Wingrave) and L’Aumonier (Dialogue des Carmelites). He also recently played Spoletta (Tosca) for London Opera Productions at Hever Castle.

 

Harry began singing as a boy chorister and continues to enjoy choral singing. He is a regular member of the choir of St Ethelreda’s, Ely Place, and recently worked with Philharmonia Voices on Stravinsky’s Oedipus Rex with Esa Pekka Salonen. As a teacher and choral conductor, he works with young singers across Berkshire, and is also resident singing teacher at St George’s College, Weybridge. Originally from Scotland, Harry now lives in North West London.

Sarah-Jane Dale

Soprano

 

Sarah-Jane has given recitals at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Banqueting House, Whitehall, in Russia (Moscow and Tver), Dulwich Picture Gallery, Hammerwood Park, Leighton House and Lauderdale House and for numerous music clubs and private clients throughout the country.

 

She studied at the Guildhall School of Music and the Britten-Pears School in Aldeburgh.

 

She has also performed at the Royal Albert Hall, St John’s, Smith Square, Purcell Room, Wigmore Hall,

British Museum, Kensington Palace, Amberley Castle,

Dorking Halls, Snape Maltings and with English National Opera, Wexford Festival Opera, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, London Opera Players, English Touring Opera and on numerous occasions for the National Trust.

 

Through the Cardiff Singer of the World competition she was chosen to represent the UK in the Rimsky-Korsakov Competition at the Marinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, reaching the semi-final. She is also the winner of several awards including the Susan Longfield Award, Caird Foundation Travelling Award, Wingate Scholarship, Schubert Prize and Ann Wyburd Awards (GSMD) and was runner-up in the International Voices of Discovery Competition.

John Gibbons

Arranger

John Gibbons has conducted numerous acclaimed productions for Opera Holland Park with ‘verismo’ operas a speciality. John is renowned for his communication with audiences and was awarded a special prize by the British Music Society in 2000 for his “communication with the audience”. John has always encompassed a broad range of disciplines within the musical world. He enjoys conducting opera, orchestral concerts, choral concerts, chamber choirs as well as performing as a pianist and organist. John regularly guest conducts the RPO as well as most of the major British orchestras including the CBSO, the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Philharmonia with whom he recorded music by Skalkottas and Joseph James. John is Principal Conductor of Worthing Symphony Orchestra, the professional orchestra of West Sussex, presenting concerts with an array of international artists in the acoustically stunning Assembly Hall, Worthing.

 

In 2008 John prepared an acclaimed new performing orchestral version of Walton’s opera Troilus & Cressida for Opera St Louis, Missouri.

 

John’s interests include renovating old houses, garden design, promoting music to all and sundry through talks such as “Is Live music Dead? and Wolverhampton Wanderers – a passion he shares with the late Sir Edward Elgar. John is also a composer and has recently written a film score for the BFI as well as choral works for Clifton Cathedral in Bristol. Work abroad includes the Romanian premiere of Walton’s First Symphony with the Georges Enescu Philharmonic as well as concerts with the Cape Town Philharmonic, Macedonian Philharmonic, the Portuguese Symphony Orchestra and opera performances in Singapore, Colorado and the Spier Festival, South Africa.
